When Overwhelming Trials Come, Part 4

“… Help us LORD our God, for we rely on You, and in Your name.” 2 Chronicles 14:11 (NIV)

Who do you rely on? Are they able to help 24/7? Can you depend on them when you experience overwhelming trials or disaster strikes?  King Asa was facing the worst trouble of his reign with a million-man army threatening him. He had about half that number in his own army, and they had nowhere to go. His story in 2 Chronicles teaches us what to do when your back is against the wall and you literally have no one to turn to. It’s the fifth step to take when overwhelming trials threaten to destroy you.

King Asa took the right step when he faced impossible odds! He cried out to God. “Help us LORD our God, for we rely on You, and in Your name.” 2 Chron. 14:11 (NIV)

He followed the example of his ancestor, King David who wrote: “When I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?”  Psalm 56:3-4 (NIV)

David wrote that when the Philistines, his mortal enemies, had seized him in Gath. Another King in David’s line wrote this when confronted with the Assyrian army that outnumbered him as well: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1 (NIV)

When the odds are against you, and you are facing overwhelming trials, you can rely on the Lord! He will never abandon you! Each of these kings faced enemies greater than they could conquer alone. None were exempt from the battle. Being a Christ follower doesn’t exempt us from trouble. In fact, it’s in the midst of trouble that we experience just how reliable God is! God is faithful! God is good. We can rely on the Lord. He is an ever-present help in time of trouble!

Because we can rely on the Lord, we refuse to be discouraged! When Joshua took over the leadership from Moses, the Lord spoke to him. “… Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

What a comfort those words must have been to Joshua. He had a monumental task of getting the Israelites into the promised land and defeating opposing nations greater than his own!

Discouragement is a formidable foe for the Christ follower. It can defeat you if you let it. That’s why the Apostle Paul wrote to Christ followers in Ephesus and said, “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground. …” Ephesians 6:13 (NIV)

Notice he wrote, “when, (not if) the day of evil comes …” When that happens take these steps. Rely on the Lord and refuse to be discouraged. God is with you! God is for you! He is not punishing you, but He may be positioning you for a greater purpose than you could even imagine!
