Before long, the world will not see Me anymore, but you will see Me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in My Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.” John 14:19-20 (NIV)

John began his gospel telling us that Jesus is the Word that became flesh and lived among us. Then, he takes it even further. He says the Word, Jesus, would live in us! Consider the impact of this statement in John 14:20 when Jesus says, “I am in you.” Since Jesus is the Word, His very life is the Gospel. Now, by the Holy Spirit He comes to reside in those who follow Him. By virtue of His presence in us, we can be the message! If Christ is in you, you are the Gospel. The New Testament talks a lot about this. Here are just a few passages among many others:

  • The mystery has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Colossians 1:26-27 (NIV)
  • “And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.” Romans 8:11 (NIV)
  • And, in Him, you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit.” Ephesians 2:22 (NIV)
  • I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20 (NIV)

Notice that, in all these references, the Apostle Paul didn’t say, “Christ and you.” He said, “Christ in you.” John would later write in 1 John 2:14, “I write to you, dear children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.” The phrase that jumps out is “… the word of God lives in you.” So, if Jesus is the Word, and the Word is the Gospel, and the Word lives in you, then you are the Gospel! That’s why Paul told the Christ followers in Corinth, “You are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.” (2 Corinthians 3:3 NIV) You are the message! You are the hands and feet of Christ in the world today to communicate the gospel through your life message! How is that possible? Remember, it’s not Christ and you. It’s Christ in you that enables you and me to be the message!
