The Wellspring of Life

Only about ten percent of an iceberg is above the water line and visible, ninety percent of it is underwater. It’s pretty amazing. And that is the way our lives are too, what is visible is just the tip of the iceberg. The actions and reactions of the people we observe each day are just outward results of what really goes on inside. But if we want to overcome the deeper issues, we’ve got to go beneath the surface and get to the heart. You want to commit to making changes in your life, to get in shape, to get organized, and to break some bad habits and hang ups. They are good things to do, but our attempts are superficial and that’s why we often fail. Each decision that we make comes from deeper priorities stemming from the heart of who we are. If we want the power to live the life that we were intended to live, we’ve got to go beyond the appearances and plunge new depths.

Out of the wellspring of the heart flows everything in our lives. It’s in our heart that we first hear the voice of God. We continue to hear the voice of God when we follow with our whole heart. The Bible uses the word heart to describe the core of who we are. Our internal motivations and desires, our loves and our passion, all come from our heart.

Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” Everything we say and do stems from the heart so before we can have a behavior change, we have to have a heart change. The good news is that we serve a God who is able to do just that.
