“My soul longs, yes, even faints For the courts of the LORD; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.” Psalm 84:2 (NKJV)
The Psalmist expresses the longing of our soul for worship. We were created to worship. We will worship something or someone even if it isn’t God. Archaeologists tell us that wherever evidence of human civilization is found, religion was part of it. Have you ever seen a child that didn’t believe in God or long to know Him? Still, skeptics remain puzzled today by the fact that religious belief not only persists in our advanced technological world but is actually on the increase! Why is that? The Bible has the answer. It tells us that man was created by God to have a relationship with God. The famous scientist, Blaise Pascal said that there is a “God-shaped vacuum” in our lives that nothing else can satisfy but God, Himself! This is why our souls yearn for something beyond themselves and this physical earthly existence to worship.
So great was the longing of the Psalmist for worship that he writes in verse 10: “A single day in Your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else! I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God than live the good life in the homes of the wicked.”
Wow! Does that express the longing in your soul as well? In his own God hunt, the Psalmists writes, “What joy for those whose strength comes from the LORD, who have set their minds on a pilgrimage…When they walk through the Valley of Weeping, it will become a place of refreshing springs…They will continue to grow stronger, and each of them will appear before God….” Psalm 84:5-7 (NLT)
Perhaps you find yourself in the Valley of Weeping today. Grief is part of our pilgrimage as well. The Bible says our tears are precious to God and He preserves them in a bottle! No sorrow is ever wasted when we take it to Him in worship. Worship releases our souls to the One who created us! It connects us to God as we shift our focus from ourselves, our circumstances, and others, and fix our souls affection on Him. Worship like that brings healing and wholeness to our souls!
