The Focus of Your Affection

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart ….” Mark 12:30a (NIV)

We get to choose the focus of our affections, what we allow in our hearts. Feelings change with whatever we let into our hearts. Our values are like magnets, and our feelings are the metal that is drawn to what we value. That’s why Jesus said,

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Luke 12:34 (NLT)

When you stop placing value on a relationship, the feelings fade away. If you want to increase the value, give undivided attention and see what happens. Undivided attention shows value. It means being all there, tuning out all the distractions of multitasking and focusing on the one you are relating to.

Another way to show value is to give constant appreciation. When we choose to give undivided attention and constant appreciation in our relationship, that loving feeling catches up with our actions. Remember, love is something you do. What can you do today that would demonstrate your love for God and others? How could you show undivided attention and constant appreciation to increase the value of your relationships? Take some loving steps of action and experience the difference of a focused relationship with increased affection.
