“People who don’t know God and the way He works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how He works.” Matthew 6:32 (MSG)
Worry is really a trust issue. Worry is saying, “God, I don’t believe I can trust You to handle this.” We think we need to control the situation. As counter intuitive as it seems, to really win over worry, I need to shift from control to surrender. This third gear will accelerate your faith beyond what you could even imagine! You’ll no longer be stuck in park fussing over all that is wrong and preventing you from moving forward. The more you release control and surrender to God’s care and control, the more you will see God at work. When I let God be God, I can relax and resign from trying to be general manager of the universe. Since when did that ever work anyway?
It’s kind of funny when you think about what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount when He declared war on worry. In Matthew 6:25-30 (NLT) He said, “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to Him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, He will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?”
Jesus pointed to the birds of the air and the lilies of the field as an example of living a “care-free” life with no worries. He said birds don’t worry. Plants don’t worry. Only human beings, who were created with the capacity to be inhabited by God, worry! His point was that wrestling with anxiety is a weight that’s unnecessary. We weren’t designed to carry the weight of worry. If we want to lighten our attitude and release that weight, we must shift from control to surrender. The truth is worry will never change the past or control the future. It only messes up the present! When we release control into God’s all powerful, almighty hands, we feel the weight of the world lifted from our shoulders. We no longer fuss over the things in life that really don’t matter at all. We draw closer to God as we come to know Him and how He works. We trust in His ability to keep what we have committed to Him.
What have you committed to Him? Have you committed your life to Him? Have you committed all that you have and all that you are to Him? Have you committed your dreams and desires to Him? Have you committed your past and your future to Him? If you really want to live in the present with peace and joy, commit it all to Him now! This is your moment to shift from control to surrender! When you do, you can say with the Apostle Paul, “… I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.” 2 Timothy 1:12 (NKJV)
