Seven Last Sayings of Jesus: Part 5

It’s Good Friday!  Yet, considering the unimaginable and horrific suffering Jesus would endure on this day, it is incomprehensible why it is called “good.” Indeed, it seemed more like a very bad day! But what was His very bad day of suffering became our very good day for redemption!

The time had come and, finally, His passion was complete.  There was only one thing more to say…

  • “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Luke 23:46 (NIV)

Following six excruciating hours on the cross, with the price of redemption paid in full, all that remained was His final surrender of life itself.  That surrender reveals a huge act of trust in the Father.

Just an hour before, He felt God-forsaken, experiencing for the first time a separation between Himself as the bearer of our sin and the pure holiness of the Father who is incapable of looking upon sin. Then, Jesus surrendered the control of His life into His Father’s hands.

What a lesson for us today.  It’s no doubt the most difficult thing for most of us to do, to surrender absolute control of our lives to God.  Yet, when we are assured of the Father’s love, despite the circumstances of our lives, we can trust that He always has our best interest at heart!  We can trust Him completely.  We can release our grip on life and let go, knowing that He will hold us and never let us go.  We can commit all that we have and all that we are to Him and experience the freedom of knowing He cares for us. If you’ve ever doubted that care, just look to the cross.  The Bible says,

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (NIV)

Jesus could release His life into God’s care and control because He knew the Father’s love.  When you know that God loves you, you can release your life into His care and control as well and know that, even on your very worst days, there is a purpose and there is an end that will lead to life eternal!

Personal Challenge:

  1. Have you surrendered everything to God?  What are you still holding on to?  Why?  Let it go by releasing your life into the Father’s hands.
