Planting Seeds of Life

“Then He told them many things in parables, saying: ‘A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop – a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”  Matthew 13:3-8

If I’m going to live a life that will last for generations, what am I planting? Every day, every moment with every action of my life, I’m planting something. So, the question is, what am I planting? When I plant some flax seeds or oats, when you think about it, they have power and potential. If I plant these seeds in the ground, they’ll grow. Why? Because there’s life. Now, say I wanted to plant some pebble rocks. If I plant a pebble rock in the ground into good soil, and I water it, and I take care of it, and I cultivate it, it’s not going to grow. There is no life in rocks. There is life in the seed. The reason why the seed has power and potential is because there’s life in it.

Some of you are spending your life planting rocks. You are doing some good things, some okay things, but there is no life in it, and it’s not going to last. You are spending your life planting rocks. There is no potential; there is no power in it because there is no life. Some of you are planting a giant rock. When people look at your life from the outside, they’re impressed because you are planting big things. A big bank account, big achievements, big goals, big dreams, a big reputation, you’re planting big things. People look at your life, and they’re pretty impressed. But, if I plant this rock in the ground, we’ll never see it again. There’s no life in it. It doesn’t matter how big it is. It doesn’t matter how big your plans are. It doesn’t matter how big your bank account is. If all you’re doing is accumulating things and trying to impress people, the moment they bury you in the ground, your impact is over. It’s done. Game over. The moment I plant this in the ground, it will never be seen again. It’s a big rock. But there’s no impact because there’s no life, and if all you’re doing in life is planting things that have no life, then your impact will be over when they put you in the ground.

If I invest my life in God’s word and people, then my impact will last for generations. The Bible says the grass withers and the flowers fade, but the Word of God stands forever. So, anytime you spend in God’s Word, like you’re doing today, is going to last forever. It’s your character you bring with you into Heaven. When your character gets built by God’s Word, that is going to last. And the second thing is people. People live forever – either in Heaven or in hell. So, anytime you do anything to make a difference in the life of someone else, and you plant an unselfish seed, it will last forever. I have to die. I die to myself. You have to die. You die to yourself, and then God brings forth life, and that’s when you find total fulfillment.

What are you planting today?
