Unlike our earthly fathers, our God never changes. In this familiar story, we see a father who watches consistently for his son’s return. In Matthew 15:20 it says, “…but while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and had compassion …” so he must have been watching for his son. The father’s behavior was consistent. When the son asked for his inheritance before the proper time, the father willing granted his request. Now, as the son returns, his love for his son has not changed. He felt compassion for his son and the mess he had made of his life while he was away.

In Psalm 103 we read of a God who redeems our life from the pit and crowns us with love and compassion…The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love; He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever. We have a Heavenly Father who is consistent, who is the same yesterday, today and forever. His love for us will never change. There is nothing we can do to make Him love us any more or any less than He does right now. He loves us perfectly and we have a God who never breaks a promise. The Bible says, even when I am faithless, He remains faithful because he is a consistent, caring Father. When you realize that, you can stop running away. He’ll run to you

“He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind.” 1 Samuel 15:29.
