“This is real love—not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” 1 John 4:10 (NLT)
Early in my journey with Christ, I used to get so concerned about the measure of my love for God. I thought if I just loved God more than I would be a better Christian, a more effective pastor. I began to get discouraged by my shallow love for God. Then, I discovered a refreshing truth from God’s Word. It was not a matter of me loving God more, it was more about how much He loved me that mattered most!
What is real love? In today’s Lectio Divina, take time to consider what the Bible teaches about love. Consider who takes the initiative. How did God manifest His love for us? As you clear your mind and quiet your heart, let the truth of God’s Word refresh your spirit. Experience the love that the Father has for you.
Read the passage out loud once in its entirety. Now, go back and read it out loud again and ask yourself, “What in this verse speaks to me today?” Allow the Holy Spirit time to breathe life into the passage speaking it to your heart.
Read the verse a third time. Ask God, “What do you want me to do because of what I’ve read?” How does the truth of what God is revealing to you about Himself and His love for you affect your life and your relationship with Him?
Now read it a fourth time. This time just relax with the assurance that you are loved of God so much that He sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away your sins.
