“Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other;
let us show the truth by our actions.”
1 John 3:18 (NLT)
Love is something you do. It’s more than mere words. In Romans 5:8 the Bible says “But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” God not only says He loves us but demonstrated that love in the most sacrificial way possible. Love is also giving. You can give without loving, but you can never really love without giving. “For God so loved the world, He gave …” is the beginning of one of the best known verses in all of the Bible. So, how do you express your love?
Read this passage out loud to yourself or with a few friends and talk about what it means to you. This is a good Lectio Divina to share with one of your most valued relationships, your spouse, your child, your parent or a close friend. Welcome the presence of the Holy Spirit together. Ask Him to guide your thoughts with the truth revealed in this verse about love. How are you doing? Are there areas in your life where God may want you to put more action in your love for others? Read the verse again and ask Him what He may want you to do that would demonstrate His love for others.
Both words and actions express love. The greatest source of love comes from God’s indwelling Spirit pouring the Father’s love into your heart. Open your heart to receive His love for you and others.
