“A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.” John 10:10 (MSG)
Read the verse for today out loud, slowly. Does this describe your experience as a Christ follower? Be honest. If you’re like me, you may say it does sometimes but not always. There are times when I wonder what happened to the abundant life that Jesus promised me. Read the verse out loud again. This time consider what may have happened that robbed you of the fullness that Jesus came to give you. What is the verse saying to you?
Read it out loud for a third time and ask God what He may want you to do? The life that Jesus offers a Christ follower is nothing short of His life – His divine presence indwelling you. As you learn to practice the presence of God through your Lectio Divinas you are more consciously aware of His presence. You begin to experience the fullness of the Holy Spirit and the joy that comes from His presence with you. The problem comes when you become preoccupied with everyday routines and schedules, with pressures and problems that seem to crowd out that conscious awareness that He is still present. So what do you do? Here’s the challenge. Recognize that there is a thief, and he comes to steal and kill and destroy all that God desires to offer you. Begin to practice the presence of God throughout your daily routines letting Christ handle all your problems. His life indwells you as much throughout the day as He does during your Lectio Divinas. Consider each problem as an opportunity in disguise for God to show Himself mighty in your life. Share your life with Him, your everyday going-to-work, eating-and-sleeping life. When you do the thief won’t have access to get in.
As you read the verse out loud for a fourth time express your gratitude to Jesus for giving you His life, eternal life, a better life than you ever dreamed of.
