Mighty God

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders.  And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)

The reason I support Jesus for President is because He is the Mighty God!  The title in Hebrew is El Gibbor and it literally means “Strong Warrior and Champion.”  When you make Christ the Commander in Chief of every decision in your life, you have a Might God who is able to keep every campaign promise He ever made!  (And the Bible has at least 7,000 of them!) He’s not a politician who just tells us what we want to hear.  Jesus tells us what we need to hear and speaks the truth in love.  He told His followers, “In this world you will have trouble….”  Can you relate?  We live in a fallen world, a sin-sick society filled with pain, injustice, and problems that need more than political answers.  We desperately need spiritual solutions that change the heart of man.  The Bible is clear that the law can never bring life.  The law condemns.  But, Christ came that we might have life in all its fullness!

If Jesus would have ended His statement with the reality of a world in trouble, we would be given to despair.  He didn’t!  He went on to say, “But take heart!”  If our world is full of trouble and no one is exempt from pain and problems, then what is there to take heart about?  Here’s the reason you and I can take heart in a world filled with trouble.  Jesus said, “I have overcome the world.”  Despite all the problems in our world, we have hope.  Jesus has overcome the world!  Maybe, you’re feeling more overcome and you’ve lost heart.  I want to encourage you if that’s the case.  Not only has Jesus overcome this fallen world, but He died and rose again to redeem us and make us overcomers!  The Apostle John wrote to believers who were certainly feeling overcome by the trials and suffering they were enduring for Christ.  He strengthened their faith and ours with this truth:

“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John 5:4-5 (NIV2011)

John said the power to overcome is available only to those born of God.  Have you been born again?  (Check!)  Then, he added that the victory that overcomes the world is our faith in God.  Do you have faith in God as Mighty God? (Check!)  Then, who is it John asks who overcomes the world?  “Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.”  Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God?  (Checkmate!)  If so, Jesus is the Commander in Chief of every decision in your life and He gives you the power to overcome!  That’s good news!

This week, we will examine three of our greatest issues for which Christ, the Mighty God, offers us power to overcome.  We all deal with one or more of these issues because we live in a world filled with trouble.  But as the citizens of Heaven, and the people of a Mighty God, our lives don’t have to reflect the doom and gloom of those around us even when we face the same troubles.  Here are the three big issues we’ll look at this week and how we can experience His power to overcome them.

1.  Christ wants to give us the power to overcome our biggest obstacle.

2.  Christ wants to give us the power to overcome our greatest fear.

3.  Christ wants to give us the power to overcome our deepest hurt.

If one or more of these issues are troubling you as they have me, take heart!  Turn to Jesus and trust Him for overcoming power!  He is the Mighty God!
