“They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.” Acts 2:46-47.
Doesn’t that sound exciting? Doesn’t that sound like something we’d all like to be a part of? You see, something amazing happens when we open up our homes to others.
First Peter 4:9 says, “Open your homes to each other without complaining.” It’s a Biblical principle. Something happens when I open my home. I encourage you to open up your home. Maybe you’ve just got a little apartment. That’s okay, open up your apartment. Open up your home and you will see how it opens up community. If God has blessed you with a home, you need to use it for Him.
Community allows us to care about others together, and that’s what it is all about. It is about caring together. Do you have people in your life who really care about you, who will really walk through things with you? Jesus said it this way in John 13:34-35, “So now I am giving you a new commandment, love each other just as I have loved you. You should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” He says the proof that you’re a Christian is that you love and care about people.
Community also sustains us in a crisis. This may be the most important part of community. It sustains us. I wish I could tell each one of you that you will never go through a tragedy. You will never go through a painful experience. You will never get that call in the middle of the night, but every one of us goes through tragedies. Every one of us will go through painful experiences. It’s unavoidable in this life, but when you have community around you, you will be sustained. When you have people around you who care about you, they will see you through with God’s power.
Someone once said, when you were born you came into the world crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life in such a way that when you die, you will be the one smiling and everyone around you will be crying. Is that how you are living your life? Caring about people? Reaching out to people?
