Lasting change always builds with belief. First and foremost, it is what He can do in and through your life that brings about the change. Now, before Peter denied Jesus, Jesus changed his name. His name was Simon, but Jesus said, “From now on you are going to be called Peter, Petras, which means the rock.” In Matthew 16:18 we read, “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” At the time Jesus said this, Peter was anything but a rock. He’s sort of a wimp who is unreliable and inconsistent. But Jesus looked past what he was at the time, and saw what he could be. Jesus looked beneath the surface to his heart and He saw what Peter could become with God’s power working through Him. I’m so glad that Jesus looks past all my faults and failures, and He sees my heart, the heart that He implanted in me, the heart’s desire that He put in my life. He sees what I can become through His power. He saw that Peter could be the rock on which He could build an entire church, and the gates of Hell wouldn’t prevail against it.
