Matthew 6:19-21 says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Giving shifts my focus from temporary trinkets to eternal treasure. Earthly treasure never lasts. It’s just temporary. Jesus was saying don’t invest for ten, twenty, or thirty years down the road. Invest for thirty million years down the road. Think about everything in the light of eternity.
Imagine that you lived in Germany right before they changed the currency from German Marks to the Euro. Let’s say you have a million German Marks but you know the day is coming when they will be worthless. So, what would you do? You would trade your German Marks for Euros because you know unless you do the day is coming when the German Mark will be completely void and worthless.
It’s the same way with temporary trinkets and eternal treasure. It’s okay to have some trinkets. You need some to live life. It’s okay to have some fun toys, but they are not going to last. So, you know the day is coming, it’s been announced that there will be a day when all of your earthly currency is worthless. But, the good news is before that day comes you can exchange it for Heavenly currency that will last for eternity. Some of you live in nice houses and you are believers, but I’m afraid for you that one day you are going to live in a hut, and it’s going to be forever, for all eternity. I want you to do some exchanging of your temporary trinkets for eternal treasure, and it will make all the difference in your life. That’s why giving shifts our focus from the temporary to the eternal.
