Grace Stories: Something in the Water

“But if we confess our sins to Him, He can be depended on to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. [And it is perfectly proper for God to do this for us because Christ died to wash away our sins.]” 1 John 1:9 (TLB)

It’s not uncommon that I hear people share how powerful the experience was when they were baptized after putting their faith in Christ to save them from the hurts, habits and hang-ups that once controlled their lives.  It often reminds me of Carrie Underwood’s song, Something in the Water, as if there was some mystical, transforming power that washed them clean.  The reality is we are made clean, but not by the water.  We are made clean by faith in Christ, and acting on that faith through baptism enables us to experience on the outside the powerful cleansing that Jesus brings on the inside of our hearts.

John put it like this in 1 John 1:9,

“But if we confess our sins to Him, He can be depended on to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. [And it is perfectly proper for God to do this for us because Christ died to wash away our sins.]”

Christ died to wash away our sins!  Baptism is a beautiful and powerful picture of His death, burial and resurrection and our identification now as one who has been forgiven and cleansed from every wrong!  The Apostle Peter described it like this in 1 Peter 3:21 (TLB)

“In baptism we show that we have been saved from death and doom by the resurrection of Christ; not because our bodies are washed clean by water but because in being baptized, we are turning to God and asking Him to cleanse our hearts from sin.”

This was the experience that Cynthia shared after her baptism.

If you would like to experience the refreshing and cleansing power of baptism like Cynthia and thousands of others have, put your trust in Christ and take the next step in believer’s baptism at our Super Summer Baptism 2 Celebration this weekend, June 22nd and 23rd.  You can register now!
