“I will lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2 (NIV)
Did you know that one of the names of God in the Bible is “The Maker of heaven and earth”? That’s the title the Psalmist gives the Lord. What a powerful description to help us understand the vastness and wonder and awe of God – The Maker of heaven and earth!
I love the way the Psalmist opens this chapter. “I will lift up my eyes….” When my head is down with discouragement and I feel helpless, what can I do? Lift up my eyes! Where? To the mountains! Being raised in Texas, we don’t have that opportunity much. But, whenever I’m in a state where I get to see the mountains, there is something about the majesty and grandeur that speaks to me of the glory and power of God! He is the creator! If He is able to create all that I see around me, He is able to help me with whatever I’m facing! In fact, two things strike me about the creativity of God.
First, as the Maker of heaven and earth, God can make something out of nothing! Abraham understood that. In Romans 4:17, the Bible says,
“… Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing.”
The writer of Hebrews put it like this:
“By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we see did not come from anything that can be seen.”
In Latin, the phrase “creatio ex nihilo” means ”creation out of nothing.” It contrasts with “creatio ex materia” meaning “creation out of some pre-existent, eternal matter” which is the most man can do. God, The Maker of heaven and earth can make something out of nothing! That’s how He creates. He spoke creation into being! Think about that for a minute. If God can make something out of nothing, He can bring love into a loveless marriage. He can create hope in a hopeless situation. He can bring peace in the midst of the storm. He can restore joy to a joyless life! What is it that God needs to speak into your life today?
Secondly, as the Maker of heaven and earth, God can make a way where there is no way! Once again, the Psalmist gives us insight into the vastness and power of our Creator. He says,
“We have escaped like a bird from the fowler’s snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Ps. 124:7-8 (NIV)
The picture here is of a helpless bird who walked into a trap in order to eat the food. Satan always baits the trap to ensnare us. If you feel trapped by sin or temptation, know that the Lord can make a way for you where there seems to be no way. He not only opens the trap to set you free but breaks it so that it cannot be used against you again! The Lord, The Maker of heaven and earth, has broken the dominion of sin and death, through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ, and we can walk in freedom through Christ! Maybe you’ve taken the bait and found yourself trapped. Open your heart to God right now and ask Him for help. Praise God that we are not helpless! Our help is in the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth!
