“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
After a number of failed New Year’s resolutions, I’ve realized I need to do more than just turn over a new leaf. I need a new life! That’s the promise of this passage! The Life Application Bible helps us understand the mystery:
“Christians are brand-new people on the inside. The Holy Spirit gives them new life, and they are not the same anymore. We are not reformed, rehabilitated, or re-educated – we are re-created (new creations), living in vital union with Christ.”
Paul describes that union in Galatians 2:20 like this:
“I have been crucified with Christ: and I myself no longer live, but Christ lives in me. And the real life I now have within this body is a result of my trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
As a Christ follower, the Lord Jesus has come to take up residence in you! By virtue of His indwelling presence, we have the capacity and power for real change! Through His death on the cross, we are reconciled to God and, by His risen life, we are daily delivered from sin’s dominion! We have a new life and a new way of life – a new perspective, new desires, a new connection with other Christ followers. Have you released the old things and embraced the new? Does your life reflect this new perspective?
Thank you Lord Jesus for exchanging my spiritually-dead life with Your risen presence, making me a new creation! I realize more, each day, that the Christian life is not about self-improvement but Christ replacement. I yield my life to Your care and control and pray that You will fill me with all the fullness of Your Spirit that I may accomplish Your good purpose.
