“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
To be in Christ is for Christ to be in you. It’s a reciprocal relationship! There is no more secure place to be than in Christ. In Christ, you have forgiveness! In Christ, you have hope! In Christ, you have eternal life! In Christ, you have confidence that you have been made right with God! In Christ, you have the capacity for transformative power to change! Only in Christ can old sinful habits be replaced with new and righteous ones.
That phrase “in Christ” is a favorite expression of Saint Paul. He not only used it here but also around 216 times in different ways in his writings of the New Testament Epistles. This short phrase summed up our union with Christ to Paul. It expresses the adventure of sharing the risen life of Jesus, here on earth on our way to heaven, that we will share with Him forever in heaven! Being in Christ makes available to every boy, girl, man or woman, all that He is! All the illimitable resources of God, the fullness of God is in Christ! I love the way the Amplified Bible puts it in Colossians 2:9-10:
“For in Him (Christ) the whole fullness of Deity (the Godhead) continues to dwell in bodily form [giving complete expression of the divine nature]. And you are in Him, made full and having come to fullness of life [in Christ you too are filled with the Godhead—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—and reach full spiritual stature]. And He is the Head of all rule and authority [of every angelic principality and power].”
Meditate on that promise today. Often, our struggle is not in believing that all the fullness of God was in Christ. Our struggle is in believing that, in Christ, we too are filled with the fullness of God! Thank God today that He has given you all you need for life and godliness!
Blessed Lord, my mind can’t conceive of all that it means for me to be in Christ. How grateful I am that it is not up to my power to change! In my union with Christ, I have available all the resources of God, His strength, His power, His righteousness! In Christ, I say goodbye to the guilt and shame of my past that I may embrace all that He is in me! Bring on the new and exciting adventure of sharing that life with You here on earth that I will share with You forever in heaven!
