“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)

You’ve just completed your first week of meditation!  Well done!  If you’re just beginning, it’s not too late to benefit from the nutrition of feeding your soul with the truth of God’s Word!  You’ll begin to flourish in your faith as you do. Effective meditation means you read the verse, recite it out loud, remember it throughout the day and reflect it by making a connection between what you are going through and what the verse says.  Meditation enables you to engraft the truth of God’s Word into your heart so you can reap the benefits and flourish!

Before we leave this passage, I want to challenge you to consider the pronoun Paul uses in his counsel to young Timothy. I find it encouraging that it was a personal pronoun suggesting that Paul himself struggled with the same fears and timidity that Timothy was experiencing.  He speaks as one beggar telling another beggar where to find food.  His tone was not condescending. He tells Timothy, “For God has not given US….”  In other words, “Timothy, I understand. I face the same fears you do. But, God didn’t give us that fear.  In fact, He has given you the same thing He has given me.  You have the same power, love and self-discipline that He’s given me.”

It’s so encouraging when you surround yourself with people who understand what you’re going through.  That’s the benefit of a community of faith.  It’s the value of a church family.  The Christian life was never intended to be lived alone.  We are called a “priesthood of believers.”  God doesn’t want you or me to be a lone ranger Christian.  It is so much easier to live out our faith when we are together.  That’s why the Bible says,

“Let us not neglect our church meetings, as some people do, but encourage and warn each other, especially now that the day of His coming back again is drawing near.” Hebrews 10:25 (TLB)

If you don’t have a church home, we invite you to consider Woodlands Church for your church family.  Join us this weekend for worship at one of our Woodlands Church campuses near you.  Connect with others in the adventure of Forty Days to Flourish and share the insights you’re learning through your meditations. It will bless them, and you’ll benefit from hearing their insights.  You may even want to register now for our Super Bowl Membership Class on Sunday, January 29th and discover how to make Woodlands Church your church home. Dear Pastor Kerry, thank you for the series Flourish. This week I have used the verse every day, it has new meaning to me, I needed to see the verse through your eyes. I was at the service for Jude. Thank you for sharing his life with us. I’ll pray for your family. Please rest in Him. Lori
