“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” Philippians 4:8 (NLT)
It’s remarkable to me that the Apostle Paul wrote this passage from a cold, damp, lonely prison cell in Rome simply for preaching the Gospel. Of all the things that would be on my mind in such a place, I’m not sure I would list any of these eight things he did. In fact, when you read the little letter of Philippians, you are immediately struck with his joy! How does he keep such a positive attitude with such negative circumstances? This passage gives us the secret! Fix your thoughts! If you want to fix your life, it begins with your thoughts. Rather than fixing his thoughts on his circumstances, he fixed them on Christ! Each of the eight things he says we should think about are really characteristics of Christ. Christ is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy! When I look to Christ rather than my circumstances, my attitude changes. Someone once said, “Attitude determines altitude!” So, how high do you want to fly?
Do you need a lift above the burdens of life you are carrying right now? Transform your thoughts from the negative circumstances you’re facing and fix them on Jesus. Even though Paul was falsely accused, he fixed his thoughts on what is true and honorable – Jesus. He is the truth. Don’t try to determine was is true based on your circumstances. You’ll draw a wrong conclusion about God, others, and yourself. Rather, fix your thoughts on Christ and let Him give you the truth about your circumstances. It may not change your situation, but it will change your attitude and lift you above your circumstances.
