“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.” Matt. 5:14-15 (NLT)
If Jesus is our source of light, how do we stay connected to Him so that our lights shine in a world filled with darkness? One way is through His Word, the Bible. The Psalmists said,
“Your Word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Psalm 119:105 (NLT)
I like the way the Living Bible paraphrases that truth:
“Your Words are a flashlight to light the path ahead of me and keep me from stumbling.”
Like a flashlight pointed at our feet, God’s Word gives us clarity to see our next step. We may not see the full extent of our path, but His Word will provide all the light we need as we continue the journey of faith. If you find yourself stumbling in the dark, turn to God’s Word and let Him shed light on your path.
Another way we stay connected to our source of light is through the Holy Spirit. In Biblical times, the lamp was not plugged into an electrical outlet; the power source for the lamp was oil. If your lamp ran out of oil, your light ceased to function. Oil was always the symbol of the Holy Spirit in Scripture. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, the light of Christ’s life will shine through all we do and say. If you want to reflect the light of Christ, continue to meditate on God’s Word and ask Him to fill you with His Spirit.
