“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.” Matt. 5:14-15 (NLT)
What is the purpose of a lamp? When you meditate on what Jesus said in this passage, you don’t have to think too hard to figure it out. The purpose of a lamp is to give light. The purpose of Christ coming to indwell His followers with His life was to bring light into a world in darkness. Peter, one of Christ’s disciples, caught the meaning and would later write to fellow Christ followers this word of encouragement:
“… you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for He called you out of the darkness into His wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9 (NLT)
When the light of Christ shines through us, we are showing others the goodness of God! We are putting His glory on display. You may be thinking to yourself “But, how can Christ’s light shine through me?” or “My life is much too broken for God to use.” Take heart! His light shines best through broken vessels. You may impress those around you with your successes, but you will influence them more with your failures and weakness. When people see His light shining in our lives, it gives them hope and brings them into the light. How is God using your light today?
