Flooded with Hope: Part 1

“May the God of all hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13 (NIV)

Crisis time is God’s time!  When we are at our lowest, God is at work in ways we cannot see.  We are too blinded by our pain and discomfort. But, when we look for Him through the eyes of faith, hope springs eternal!

Jesus is called our “Blessed Hope” in the New Testament.  Only those who are without God, the Bible says, are “without hope.”  In Christ, we have hope no matter what the circumstances!  The apostle Paul experienced that himself and wanted those in Rome who were suffering unimaginable hardships to know it as well.  That’s why he wrote to them and said,

“May the God of all hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13 (NIV)

Hope – God’s hope, offers us four benefits that lift us out of despair to begin again!  Hope restores our lives, our vision and our passion for life! Consider the benefits of hope and let God fill you with hope until you overflow!

  1. God’s hope gives me joy when I’m hurting.

Jesus knew His disciples would experience sorrow and pain when He would be crucified.  All their hopes for a Messiah were dashed with His death.  Yet He told them in advance,

“You have sorrow now, but I will see you again and then you will rejoice; and no one can rob you of that joy.” John 16:22 (LB)

You see Jesus knew what they couldn’t possibly understand.  He would rise again!  Death was not the end!  Their hopes would be renewed when He would return!  After that, no one could rob them of their joy!  Experiencing the resurrected Christ gives us hope when we’re hurting.

  1. God’s hope gives me peace when I feel anxious.

Hopelessness fills our hearts with fear, worry and anxiety.  It often happens when we try to control everything only to realize how out of control our situation really is.  The recent floods from Hurricane Harvey have clearly demonstrated how little control we really have over our lives.  The truth is we can’t control our lives but we can turn our lives over to God’s care and control and trust Him.  When we do, He fills us with hope that brings peace when we feel anxious.  When writing to the church in Philippi, the apostle Paul said,

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:6-7 (NIV)

God offers you peace for your panic.  His peace transcends all understanding!  It’s a peace that is able to calm your spirit and guard your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus.

These are just two of the benefits of hope God offers when we turn to Him in the midst of the storm.  We’ll look at two more tomorrow.  Until then, let God fill you with hope and experience the joy and peace that His hope brings.
