Contrary to our culture, meekness is not weakness. Meekness, in the Bible, is strength under control. It’s the description of a horse trained for battle, yielding to the control of the rider. Jesus said it would take meekness for us to surrender our lives to His control. But, what does that really mean?
How do you stay true to God? Concerned that Christ followers in Philippi may wander from the faith, Paul writes this closing challenge to them, “Therefore, my brothers and sisters, stay true to the Lord….”
It’s a choice to rejoice. When Paul wrote to the church in Philippi, he was speaking from personal experience. He told them, “Whatever happens my dear brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord. I never get tired of telling you these things, and I do it to safeguard your faith.”
In addition to the weekly Sabbath in the Old Testament, God established seven festivals for His people to celebrate and worship. These were intended to be celebrations and memorials ordained as feast days of supreme JOY and sublime REJOICING! So, when did we turn festivals into funerals?
Have you been bewitched? I’m not talking about the sitcom where the lady wiggles her nose and bewitches people. I’m talking about the evil spell that Satan casts on so many believers today that robs them of the very life Christ came to offer them. Like those believers among the churches in Galatia, believers today can be bewitched from the simplicity that is in Christ.
There are many names for God in the Bible that help us better understand His nature, character and ways like: Jehovah Jireh – the God who provides or Jehovah Shalom – the God of Peace or Jehovah Rapha – the God who heals. These are just a few; but, among the many Hebrew names of God, my favorite is “Jehovah in the nick of time!”
Would you trade something of immeasurable worth for something completely worthless? Probably not. But that is exactly what God did when He gave His one and only Son to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God.
Temptations – we all deal with them, sometimes better than others if you’re like me. Temptations can leave you feeling battered and overwhelmed at times, even trapped. The good news is that you are not alone in the temptations you struggle with. Even Jesus faced temptations.
What are you leaning on in life? All of us lean on something or someone. You may be leaning on your abilities, your intellect or your resources. So far, they’ve proven stable enough to support you. But what about in a real crisis, when the storms of life come and you don’t know what to do?
It’s the challenge of every generation to do the will of God. The truth is we are always just one generation away from extinction. One of the saddest Bible verses to me is found after the greatest conquest in Israel’s history. Joshua had led them into the Promised Land after 40 years of wilderness wanderings and over 20 years of battles. But, something happened that explains the dark days of Israel’s history when every man did what was right in his own eyes and they suffered such great defeat.
