Keeping Your Soul Anchored in the Storms of Life

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”
Hebrews 6:19 (NIV)

The writer of Hebrews offers us hope that will keep our souls anchored in the storms of life.  In Hebrews 6 verse 19, the Bible says, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” What hope is he talking about? That hope is Jesus Christ, who, like an anchor for our souls, keeps us firm and secure no matter what storm we are facing.  Life is challenging, but God says we are “ … more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” Romans 8:37 (NIV).

Like an anchor, His love is immovable and holds us firmly on course even when our lives are battered.  The writer of Hebrews illustrated that truth in the life of Abraham.  In verse 15, he tells us, “Abraham waited patiently, and he received what God had promised.”  When you do the math, Abraham was 75 years old when God called him and promised him a son.  Isaac was born when he was 100 years old.  Twenty-five years is a long time to wait. How long have you been waiting for God to come through?

The time that lapses between when a promise is made and when it is fulfilled is the most challenging. As the years pass, doubt creeps in and makes us wonder if we really heard from God.  Is He there?  When will He fulfill what He promised?  What do I do?  This is when you experience the anchor that holds you and keeps hope alive because the promise that was made to you was made by God.  The preceding verses in Hebrews 6:17-18 say, “God also bound Himself with an oath; so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that He would never change His mind. So God has given both His promise and His oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can gave great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.”

Did you get that? “… it is impossible for God to lie.”  God’s promises are unchangeable and trustworthy because God is unchanging and trustworthy. We can be secure in His promises! He won’t change His mind. Our hope is secure and immovable, anchored in Christ, just as a ship’s anchor holds firmly to the seabed.

Are you experiencing a storm today? Stay tethered to the only hope that can keep you firm and secure.
