“He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, He brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us.” 2 Corinthians 1:4 (MSG)
Here’s a passage that offers purpose in your pain. It assures us that God can take our biggest mess and turn it into our most powerful message! He has a way of taking our brokenness and making something beautiful out of it. The most beautiful people I’ve ever known are those who experienced great pain and loss but moved deeper into God’s love instead of becoming bitter. You can see the beauty of Christ reflected in their compassion for others.
I think one reason we’re drawn to the beauty of brokenness is because we can all relate. You impress people when you talk about your strengths, but you influence people when you admit your struggles. I’m drawn to people who are honest about their struggles and pain. Don’t hide your messes. Admit them to God and invite Him to start working a miracle in your life. Then, be transparent with others so they can see the beauty of Christ reflected through your brokenness.
The Bible tells us that God comes alongside us when we go through hard times and, then, uses those painful experiences – even our messes – so that we may come alongside someone else who is going through hard times and be there for them just as God was there for us. Your mess is your message. Too often, we try to cover up the very things in our lives that display the beauty of Christ’s love and forgiveness. His grace is put on display in our lives for others to see, and that offers them hope for their mess. In his own testimony, the Apostle Paul said,
How true it is, and how I long that everyone should know it, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—and I was the greatest of them all. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as an example to show everyone how patient He is with even the worst sinners, so that others will realize that they, too, can have everlasting life. 1 Timothy 1:15-16 (TLB)
It takes a lot of courage to stop hiding behind the mistakes in our past. We may think we’ve blown it beyond even God’s ability to ever use us again. All we can see is the ugliness of our mess but, when we give it to God, He makes it our message to display His beauty!
