Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14 (NIV)
Where do you look for affirmation and love? The number of “likes” you get on your Instagram post? Maybe you look for it from your kids or your husband. It is easy to get caught up in the things of this world. God has called us to live in the world, but not to be of it. So many things are available to us that distract us from God. I am guilty of getting caught up in how others view me instead of recognizing that my Creator loves me and that I don’t have to show off to get His attention. I fight to get affirmation from imperfect, sinful people, yet He already loves me with a perfect love. This is such a simple truth, yet we constantly look past it and search for validation from this world. Jesus encountered a woman one day who was looking for love in all the wrong places. When Jesus asked her to call her husband, she replied, “I have no husband.”
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.” John 4:17-18 (NIV)
Jesus knew her heart. He could see how hard she tried to fill that hole in her heart with the love she so desperately longed for, only to be disappointed over and over again. Jumping from one affair to another hoping to experience love, yet each time feeling used and abandoned. Soon, shame would drive her to escape any social encounters, so she comes to the well in Samaria in the heat of the day. It was a time when others would least likely be there. When she arrived at the well on this day, however, she met Jesus and her life would be forever changed! She experienced unconditional love for the first time from a man who wanted nothing from her but offered her everything!
She had been drinking water from the wrong well all her life. Jesus told her,
“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
I love her response! She said to Jesus, “Sir, give me this water to drink….” What about you? From what well are you drinking? Where are you looking for love in your life? God wants you to know that the hole you feel in your heart is not because you need a man or woman in your life. It’s because you need God in your life. Drink from the water of life. Drink freely, and you’ll never thirst for anything less again!
