Beauty Begins: Where Beauty Begins

by Chris Shook and Megan Shook Alpha

“He has made everything beautiful in its time.” Ecclesiastes 3:11a (NLT)

Do you believe you’re beautiful?

The truth is, almost every woman battles to feel beautiful every single day. As a mother and daughter living in the same hurting world you live in, Megan and I also struggle to feel beautiful at times.  But, when we begin to believe the truth of who we really are and who God made us to be, we’re set free to feel beautiful!  Beauty begins in a love that never ends!

Do you believe God sees you as beautiful?

He does! In fact, the Bible even says that God is “enthralled by your beauty.” Maybe, you’ve looked away from the mirror of God’s truth and, instead, into the distorted mirror of our culture.  Our culture constantly sends messages to girls and women of all ages, enslaving them to fashion, diets, and gym memberships and confusing the meaning of true beauty with the concept of pretty. Beauty begins in the heart of God.  The Bible tells us, “He has made everything beautiful in its time” and that means YOU!

Making peace with your reflection is so important, because if we fail to do that, we will declare war on ourselves!  Generations of women have become casualties in this war on self-worth.  In our research, we discovered the battle to feel beautiful has contributed to everything from low self-esteem and poor body image to eating disorders and self-harm. Jesus warns us that we have an enemy whose strategy is to steal our self-worth, kill our passion for life, and destroy our hopes and dreams by convincing us to believe the lie that robs us of our true beauty.  That enemy will constantly whisper destructive lies in your thoughts like, “You’re not beautiful. You’re not valuable. You’re not worth anything.”  Then he gets really specific with his lies. “You’re too fat.”  “You’re too tall.”  “You’re too short.” “Your eyes aren’t the right color.” And the lies go on and on.

On the other hand, Christ came to offer us true self-worth with a full and meaningful life.  He wants us to feel full of beauty, full of joy, full of peace, and full of value and meaning!  And Jesus tells us the truth will set us free.  When we begin to believe the truth of who we really are and who God made us to be, we’ll be set free to feel beautiful.   Isn’t it time to stop believing the lies and start living the truth?  To be honest, we’re tired of watching a generation of beautiful young girls and women, along with their mothers, being slowly and methodically destroyed by the lies of Satan that our culture constantly tries to force on us.  Beauty that goes beyond skin deep begins in the heart of God, and He placed that longing for beauty in our hearts.  To find that beauty we must stop looking in the broken mirror of our culture and start seeing ourselves as the reflection of His beauty.  The only mirror that matters is God’s! Which one are you holding up?

If we want to feel beautiful, we need to start by changing the way we think about beauty.  Our culture says beauty is all about outward appearance, but Christ says true beauty comes from the inside.  True beauty starts with focusing on others.  Not on our hair, clothes, or abs, but on others. So let’s fill our minds with this countercultural truth, and we’ll make a fashion statement that reveals true beauty.  If you’re ready for a God-given makeover that won’t ever fade away, join Megan and me in our journey Beauty Begins.
