“For we are God’s masterpiece.” Ephesians 2:10a (NLT)
If you walk through an art museum and see the beautiful paintings of the masters like Monet, Rembrandt, Renoir, and Michelangelo, you wouldn’t think, I guess someone spilled a bucket of paint on that canvas. No, you would immediately recognize that it was painted by a master artist. The fingerprints of the master artist are all over it. The same is true of you and me! In Ephesians 2:10, the Apostle Paul tells us that we are God’s masterpiece! We are His Divine work of art. And, if God considers us His masterpieces, who are we to insult the Master by treating ourselves and others with disrespect or as some inferior work.
The New Testament word for “masterpiece” (poiema) is the word from which we get our English word “poem.” You are God’s own personal work of poetry. If the material world reflects the beauty and majesty of its Creator, how much more wonderful and marvelous is our beauty as the crown of God’s creation itself? The Psalmist said,
“I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14 (NIV)
It’s also encouraging to note that we are not just some work of art, we are God’s masterpiece! In the Greek word order, God stands emphatically forward in this verse, literally, God’s masterpiece are we. That puts the emphasis on the divine origin we now enjoy through Christ! When we come to Jesus with our broken and shattered lives, He makes us a new creation in Christ – a Divine Masterpiece! What we are now is a result of His grace entirely! We bear a sacred reflection! This leaves no room for any boasting or pride on our part as if it were the result of some temporary makeover. The Master artist supernaturally recasts us in His own image for His good pleasure. We are no longer our own.
In 1 Corinthians 6, the Apostle Paul reminds us that we are bought with a price, the precious blood of God’s own Son. Therefore, he says, honor God with your body. As His work of art, you were created to display His glory! Do you believe God sees you as beautiful? You’ll begin to feel beautiful when you start believing the truth that the Master Artist beautifully created you as His masterpiece.
