“So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.” Colossians 3:12-14 (MSG)

The Urban Dictionary defines a fashion rebel as “someone who doesn’t conform to ‘what’s in’ in the fashion world.” The funny thing is that, when a celebrity stands out as a rebel or indie in the fashion world, everyone seems to consider it very fashionable and trendy. Before you know it, the indie fashion is mainstream, and everyone is wearing it. It’s conformity and uniformity all over again.

If we really want to be fashion rebels, we first have to rebel against our culture’s view that beauty is all about what we look like and wear. The apostle Paul told us that we aren’t supposed to fall in line with culture, but we’re to be cultural rebels. In Romans 12:2, he said,

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

The Greek word translated as conform literally means to squeeze into a mold. Paul is saying, “Don’t let the culture squeeze you into its mold.” Our culture constantly pressures women and girls to fit into a particular mold when it comes to beauty, a mold that destroys our uniqueness and true beauty. It has been said, “Everyone is born original, but most people die as copies.” It’s true!

If we want to live from our sacred reflections and true selves, Paul says we first must let God change the way we think. We must be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Remember, if we change the way we think, our actions will begin to change. And, when our actions change, then our feelings start to change. If we want to feel beautiful, we need to start by changing the way we think about beauty. Our culture says beauty is all about outward appearance, but Christ says true beauty comes from the inside. So let’s fill our minds with this counter-cultural truth, and we’ll make a fashion statement that reveals true beauty.

If you really want to be a fashion rebel, you need to put on the wardrobe God has picked out for you. You’ll find it in Colossians.

Never be without it.” (3:12-14 MSG)
