If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 1 Corinthians 13:1 (NLT)

It’s been said that people won’t remember what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel. That’s the power of love! God not only loves, but God is love! In Him, we have the capacity to love like He loves. It’s a language that requires no translation and communicates the message of the Gospel like no other!

In 1 Corinthians 13, the Apostle Paul shows the superiority of love over any other quality and offers us the characteristics of God’s love; it’s unlike any other form of love we’ve ever experienced! Before he defines love, he describes what our world would be like without it. He says;

Without love, words are meaningless.

Compliments are hollow and patronizing in the absence of love. If you want your words to have meaning, before you open your mouth to speak, open your heart to care. St. Francis of Assisi said, “Preach the gospel at all times and, when necessary, use words.” Lewis Cass added, “People may doubt what you say, but they will always believe what you do.” In 1 John 3:18, the Bible tells us

You show love for others by truly helping them, and not merely by talking about it.

Challenge yourself to take on a ministry project of helping someone in need. It could be mowing someone’s yard, picking up or, even, buying their groceries. Be the message of encouragement and hope that someone needs this weekend. Begin with prayer and ask God to show you the one He has in mind and, then, act on what He shows you to do. It could be as simple as inviting them to church with you or taking them a meal. Share with us what God did as you stepped out of your comfort zone to demonstrate God’s love!

  1. Wonderful devotional, Pastor! A funny thing happened a few years back when God blessed us big. Along with the blessing, He gave us a heart for giving. He changed my materialistic heart, my selfish heart, my ego-driven heart into a flowing river of loving and giving :-). I pray everyday for my Lord to show me who He wants me to love, and He does. Sometimes they need money, sometimes they need help, sometimes they need understanding, sometimes they need a smile, sometimes they need hope, sometimes they need an ear, sometimes they just want to know that someone, anyone, cares….”Give me your eyes for just one second, give me your eyes so I can see, everything that I keep missin`, give me Your love for humanity. Give me your arms for the broken-hearted , the ones that are far beyond my reach. Give me Your heart for the ones forgotten. Give me Your eyes so I can see.” (Brandon Heath)

  2. I pulled in and parked at Humble Area Assistance Ministries. Only one car besides mine, which was odd. “Are they closed?”. I was there to give a donation, but it was New Years Eve and there was no one inside. A young woman was pacing back and forth, looking in the windows, obviously upset. I got out of the car to see what was wrong. There were three little ones in that old car, six sweet eyes watching innocently. As I approached the woman, an odd thing happened—it felt as though everything around us went out of focus, and it was just her, those babies, and me. I asked her what was wrong and she was whimpering. “How can they be closed???? People need help.” She spoke the way people do when they don’t hear well, she was mostly deaf. I asked what she was there for, and she said she had been locked out of her apartment, evicted. She had borrowed that old car to try to get emergency help with rent. There we were, just me and her, in God`s spotlight. It was plain and obvious what He wanted me to do. I wrote a check for her rent and emptied my purse of all cash for her to get some food. She started trying to tell me how she had a job, wasn’t a deadbeat, etc., while I wrote the check. I told her to stop talking like that, Jesus loves her and that’s all that matters. She was just staring at me with the most curious look in her eyes, “You`re a REAL angel.”, she said. I laughed and handed her the check, honored to have been chosen and trusted to give His love.
