A Government of Peace and Justice

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over His kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.” Isaiah 9:6-7 (NIV2011)

Wouldn’t it be great if we could just elect Jesus for President? One day, the Bible tells us that the government will rest on His shoulders. Thankfully, you and I don’t have to wait until then!  When we make Christ the Commander in Chief of every decision, we not only experience less stress but He gives us all the wisdom we need to make the right choices. Have you done that?  Or are you still trying to control everything in your life?  How’s that working for you?  The wisest decision I ever made was when I surrendered the control of my life to Christ’s care and control.  When the government of our lives and our world rests on Jesus’ shoulders, there will be peace because He is the Prince of Peace!  Because He is called “Wonderful”, there will be nothing dull about His reign!  As Counselor, He alone has the wisdom to rule with perfect justice and, as the Mighty God, He has the power to execute His wise plans.

Making Christ the Commander in Chief simply means putting God first in every decision.  In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told a crowd filled with anxiety over the very basic needs of life all the benefits they would experience when they put God first in their lives.  He said,

“So My counsel is: Don’t worry about things—food, drink, and clothes. For you already have life and a body—and they are far more important than what to eat and wear. Look at the birds! They don’t worry about what to eat—they don’t need to sow or reap or store up food—for your heavenly Father feeds them. And you are far more valuable to Him than they are. Will all your worries add a single moment to your life? And why worry about your clothes? Look at the field lilies! They don’t worry about theirs. Yet King Solomon in all his glory was not clothed as beautifully as they. And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow, won’t He more surely care for you, O men of little faith? So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and He will give them to you if you give Him first place in your life and live as He wants you to.” Matthew 6:25-33 (TLB)

Have you given Jesus first place in your life? The Living Bible paraphrases Proverbs 3:5, 6 like this,

“In everything you do, put God first, and He will direct you and crown your efforts with success.”
