Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. Acts 8:36-38 (NKJV)
A divine appointment is when a seeking soul crosses the path of a willing witness and experiences the forgiveness of a gracious God! That was exactly the case for this Ethiopian eunuch and Philip. Philip had been preaching the gospel in the city of Samaria where he had fled from persecution in Jerusalem. As a result of his preaching, the entire city responded to the Gospel, and the Bible says there was great joy in that city!
In the midst of this spiritual awakening, God spoke to Philip and led him down a desert road to encounter a seeking soul, an Ethiopian that was returning from Jerusalem. He was a man of great authority; he served as the treasurer to the Queen of Ethiopia. He had gone to the Temple in Jerusalem to worship, yet he was returning just as empty as he was before! Religion could not fill the void in his heart. On his way back to Ethiopia, he was reading the scroll of Isaiah, but didn’t understand its meaning. That’s when Philip came in! Philip began to explain the promise of the Messiah and how Jesus died and rose again for our sins! I love the response of the Ethiopian! He looked at some water nearby and asked Philip, “What hinders me from being baptized?” What an eager seeker! He was eager to follow Jesus and obey His Word to be baptized! He wanted to show on the outside what Jesus had done on the inside when He cleansed his heart of sin.
When the heart is right, the hand is swift! What was the prerequisite for his baptism? Philip looked at him and said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” The Ethiopian was quick to respond! “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” What a divine appointment! This foreigner to Israel put his faith in Christ and experienced the forgiveness of a gracious God! Philip must have been just as amazed! When God is at work, we all get to experience Him! Philip experienced the power of the gospel in changing an Ethiopian’s heart.
What about you? Have you put your faith in Christ? Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God? Then, nothing should hinder you from taking that next step in baptism – just like this Ethiopian.
