“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” Luke 15:20 (NIV)
What an image of a Father’s love Jesus painted for us in the Parable of the Prodigal Son. No other religion in the world has a God who runs to a broken and repentant heart that returns to Him! You cannot read this parable without feeling the pain and hurt that sin brings or the overwhelming joy that comes with repentance and restoration! The last thing this son would have ever expected was the grace and love he received from his father when he came home. The Son had already rehearsed his confession earlier in the parable. When all his money ran out and with it his “friends”, the Bible says, “he came to his senses, (and) said, ‘how many of my father’s hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son’ make me like one of your hired men.’” The story opened with the son running away from his father and ends with the father running to his son! It’s the only time in the Bible where we are told God ran. What are you running from today? Stop! Stop running and rest in the Father’s approval. The moment we stop running and return to God, He runs to us! In both the Old and New Testaments God says, “Return to Me and I will return to you.” What a promise! Do you remember the day God ran to you? If not, why not today? Stop running from Him and simply rest in His promise to run to you. Filled with compassion, He will throw His arms of love around you and hold you in the grip of grace! I promise you, when that happens, you will never forget the day, God ran to you!
